Your Windows XP user account ("Windows profile") is optionally protected by a password that prevents others from accessing your files and preferences. One you add a password to Windows XP, it will remain in place unless you delete the password protection. If you decide at any point to change your XP password, it will only take a couple of minutes, as you'll learn in this tutorial.
Tip: you can also change Windows password with command line (DOS prompt).
How do I change my Windows XP password?
Follow these steps to change your XP password:
- Once you have logged on to your user profile in Windows XP, you are ready to change your password: just click on the start menu, and choose "Control Panel":

- When the Windows XP Control Panel opens, double-click on "User Accounts":

- You will see a listing of not just your own user profile, but all Windows profiles that have been added to this particular computer. If you want to change the password of another Windows XP user, you can do it from here too, but you will need to know the administrator's password.
- Click on the user name whose password you want to change - in our case, we will click on our own user profile, as shown on the screenshot below:

- Once the selected user's profile page loads, you will see a series of actions you can perform for this particular user. Click on the "Change my password" link:

- Note: if you want to remove password protection altogether and delete the password from the selected user's profile, just click instead on the "Remove my password" link.
- If you clicked on "Change my password", the "Change your password" screen will load next. First, for security reasons, confirm your current password by entering it inside the "Type your current password" text field. Then, enter the new password you want for Windows XP (and your user profile) inside the next two text fields:

- You can optionally enter a "password hint" - we recommend that you do, in case you forget your XP password and are locked out of your own computer! Make sure that the hint is good enough to help you remember a forgotten password, but hard enough to prevent others from guessing your new password and accessing your Windows XP profile.
- Once you have changed your password and optionally added a password hint, click on the "Change Password" button to apply the change. It may take a few seconds, but Windows XP will eventually return you the previous screen; you can close the Control Panel.
And that is all it takes to change your password in Windows XP!
