Once you add a user account in Windows Vista, it will optionally have password protection; either the computer administrator or yourself can change Vista password: in fact, anyone who has the administrator's password can change any other Windows user's password (which is why it is a good idea not to share this password with everyone!) While the process of changing your password or another user's is similar, this tutorial focuses on showing you how to change your own Windows Vista password.
Tip: you can also change Windows password with command line (DOS prompt).
How do I change my Windows Vista password?
Here are the steps to follow to change your Vista credentials and password:
- Once you have logged in to Windows Vista, open the start menu, and click on the "Control Panel" button to access user accounts, as shown on the screenshot below:

- Once you are inside the Control Panel, the quickest way to change your password (instead of navigating through icons) is to simply type "change password" in the search field in the top right corner of the window, and Windows Vista will load all matching settings:

- Hit Enter once you finished typing, and Windows Vista will display a series of link results: under the section "User Accounts", click on "Change your Windows password":

- The next screen ("Make changes to your user account") will offer several actions to perform on your own Windows profile; to change another Windows Vista user's password, you'll need to click on "Manage another account" link and go from there. To change your own Vista password, click on the "Change your password" link to access the screen of the same name.
- There are three text fields in the "Change your password" screen of the Control Panel; in the first one, you will need to type your current Vista password (this is just a security measure that prevents others from changing your own user account password).

Then, type the new Vista password you want to change to inside "New password", and retype it as confirmation (to prevent typos) inside "Confirm new password".
- Optionally supply a Password Hint in case you forget your password later on: we do recommend that you take advantage of this handy feature - just make the password hint personal and hard enough to crack so that only you will be helped by it!
- To finalize the new setting and apply it, click on the "Change password" button, and Windows Vista will bring you back to the previous screen as confirmation. Remember to logon to Vista with the new password from this point on!
