Whether you have a single Mac user or multiple user account profiles on your computer, each has optionally been password-protected when you (or the computer administrator) has created that new user profile. But you can at any point change the password you use to logon to your Mac desktop or laptop, as you'll learn in this tutorial. Note that depending on your security settings, you may need to have the administrator's password in order to change your or another user's account password.
How do I change my Mac password (Mac OS X user account)?
Follow these very easy steps to change password on your Mac:
- Click on the Apple menu in the upper left corner of the screen: choose "System Preferences".
- When the System Preferences window has opened, the fourth section will be labeled "System" - click on the "Accounts" button (two-silhouettes icon) to see all user accounts.
- The next screen will display "My Account" selected by default, which is the user account under which you are currently logged in. To change another user's password, select his or her account in the listing, shown under "Other Accounts".
- When the selected user's profile information loads on the right side of the window, make sure that the "Password" tab is selected (it should automatically be).
- Then, click on the "Change Password" visible next to the user icon (seen above).
- As soon as you do, Mac OS X will open a new dialog: enter your current password inside the "Old Password" text field, a security measure to prevent others from changing your password without your knowledge or consent (unless they happen to know your current password themselves!) Then, enter the password you want to change to inside the "New Password" field, and re-enter it for confirmation inside the "Verify" text field.
- While the next step is optional, we strongly recommend that you do supply a "Password Hint" for your new password - that hint will be displayed when you unsuccessfully attempt to logon to Mac OS X with a correct user name but an incorrect password. Do ensure that this password hint is only a hint for you, and not others who have access to your machine!
- Finally, click on the "Change Password" button and OS X will apply the setting immediately. From thereon, remember to use your new password to access your Apple computer.
And this is all there is to changing your Mac password! Now learn how to change Mac Mail password.
